Seattle is known for many things – coffee, mountains, fresh seafood. So it’s an ideal place to start your exploration of the Pacific Northwest. But the region has so much to see – getting out in nature is a major draw – that you’ll want to make sure you have a good car rental so you can see everything Seattle has to offer. Or at least try to see it all.
When most people think of Seattle, they usually think of things like the Space Needle, or the Pike Place marketplace. But Seattle, known as the “Emerald City” because of the surrounding evergreen forests, is home to a number of different neighborhoods that are worth exploring. So hop in your rental car and get ready to see another side of Seattle!
The first stop is West Seattle. Located across the West Seattle Bridge, this bustling neighborhood is home to plenty of restaurants and unique shops. West Seattle has a mellow vibe and beach culture. Head down to Alki Beach for a volleyball game or a beer by the water. It’s a chill way to spend an afternoon that will leave you feeling refreshed and ready for more adventure.
Next up is Ballard. This charming neighborhood located to the north of downtown is where historic meets hip. Come discover the city’s Nordic heritage and check out the Ballard Locks, the busiest locking system in the country. If you’re lucky, you’ll also be able to see salmon swimming upstream here. While you’re in Ballard, head to the Ballard Market on Sunday and get fresh food from Washington State – the market only sells produce from local farmers.
While Seattle may be a city, it has plenty of greenery for nature lovers. Discovery Park is a great opportunity for urban hiking. A few minutes after venturing onto the park’s trails and you’ll forget you’re in one of America’s major cities.
Or you could take the ferry to Bainbridge Island and explore this serene and idyllic island. Be sure to take your car, though – the island is beautiful, but the only way to get from the ferry dock to places like the Japanese Garden, a must-see, is by car. It is well worth your time when visiting the Seattle area.
As great as the city of Seattle is, there’s so much to see in the surrounding area, too, including Mount Rainier, two hours south of the city. A rental car is the most convenient way to get there and allows you to come and go as you please. Plus, you’ll have plenty of room for that picnic lunch you stocked up on when you went to Ballard Market.
