It was here in 1799 that a young Conrad Reed discovered a whopping 17-pound gold nugget while fishing in Little Meadow Creek giving rise to America’s first gold rush. Located in Midland, an easy 40-minute drive from Charlotte, today the Reed Gold Mine offers guided tours of the underground mine tunnels dating to the 1830s. It will be an easy trip around Charlotte with your rental car! Want to find your own nugget? Gold panning is available Tuesday through Saturday between early April and late October (weather permitting).
