Welcome to Charlotte, North Carolina

Rent a car while you’re in Charlotte and enjoy your trip

Whether you’re flying into Charlotte Douglas International Airport for business or pleasure, you’ll want to make the most of your time in this incredibly vibrant southern city but to do that you’ll need to rent a car. While the Queen City has so many great things going for it, an efficient public transportation system isn’t one of them. In fact, car-dependent Charlotte currently ranks as the 20th worst city in the US to live in without a car! And out of 130 cities with populations over 200,000, Charlotte is sixth from last when it comes to walkability according to Walk Score, an organization that measures walkability by analyzing walking routes and the distance of local amenities.

Rent your car and discover Charlotte!

With its historic architecture, museums, NASCAR Hall of Fame, shopping, craft breweries and fabulous bars and dining options, you really will be spoiled for choice. Why not start your visit by getting a feel for historic downtown Charlotte (or ‘uptown’ as it called by locals) by going on a self-guided walking tour that takes in many significant buildings, such as the Liddell-McNinch House, Newcomb-Berryhill House and Overcarsh House. Download the “GPSmyCity: Walks in 1K+ Cities” app or plan your own bespoke route.
After all that walking, you’ve probably worked up an appetite and no trip to Charlotte would be complete without sampling its unique style of BBQ – always pork and always served with a thin vinegar-based sauce. Hop in your Getaround and head over to Bar-B-Q King, a West Charlotte institution since 1959. This iconic red and chrome drive-in features order-matic menus and articulated trays so you can dine in your vehicle curbside. Just make sure you have plenty of napkins so you don’t incur a vehicle cleaning charge!

There’s gold in them thar hills!

Well, not quite but there is at the Reed Gold Mine. It was here in 1799 that a young Conrad Reed discovered a whopping 17-pound gold nugget while fishing in Little Meadow Creek giving rise to America’s first gold rush. Located in Midland, an easy 40-minute drive from Charlotte, today the Reed Gold Mine offers guided tours of the underground mine tunnels dating to the 1830s. It will be an easy trip around Charlotte with your rental car! Want to find your own nugget? Gold panning is available Tuesday through Saturday between early April and late October (weather permitting).
